Key Insights
What is a Gopher? The term “gopher” doesn’t refer to a single species, but rather to a group of burrowing rodents within the family Geomyidae. There are around 35 species of pocket gophers, found exclusively in North and Central America. Gophers only eat plants, which again makes them different than moles, which eat insects. Gophers spend the majority of their time underground and only emerge to quickly gather food (which they put into their cheek pockets) and bring it back to the tunnel system for storage.
